“The announcement of the July General Election surprised me, as it did almost everyone, and it leaves Solace members across the country just six weeks to prepare less than a month after the local elections wrapped up.

“While this will be the first national test for recent electoral rule changes, returning officers and their teams are well-practiced at operating elections at short notice and we can have every confidence fair and safe elections will be run across the country on 4 July.

“The timing of the election is helpful; had it been in the autumn, there would’ve been little time for a meaningful Spending Review before next year’s local government finance settlement…”
