Solace statement on publication of Government’s Industrial Strategy

Today Prime Minister Theresa May set out the Government’s plans for a Modern Industrial Strategy aimed to improve living standards and economic growth across the country. This is a statement from Martin Swales, Chief Executive of South Tyneside Council and Solace Spokesperson on Economic Growth and Housing, in response:

“Solace welcomes the Government’s new Industrial Strategy and the focus on ensuring growth and opportunity are
distributed across the country.”

“Local Government plays a key role in creating the conditions in which economies can grow and will continue to be at the heart of this process. Solace looks forward to working with Government and our LEP partners, to drive more inclusive, place-sensitive growth within locally agreed Strategic Economic Plans. The plans set out today recognise the distinct strengths that different geographical areas can bring to a national growth strategy and it is very encouraging that Government recognises the need to back local expertise. Enabling funding, for skills, infrastructure
and inward investment will also be key components for a forward thrusting strategy to help drive global competitiveness.”

“This is the start of an important debate for our country and we look forward to progressing discussions across local government and with our private sector partners to respond more fully to the Green Paper proposals.”
